Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

I believe in pleasing yourself first, naturally, so I am not out looking for role models or to be a role model. I think people need to make their own mistakes, learn from them and grow, and there's nothing that a pop star, figure skater, politician or terrorist can do to help you through those times or teach them the meaning of life.

Men in rhinestones are the norm, but I guess I just take it over the top.

Nobody should be ashamed of anything. You live your life, other people will live theirs. Being gay, being black, being jewish, being fat or thin is nothing to be ashamed of. If you're you and truthfully you, then you only have things to be proud of. Never let small minded people or people uncomfortable with themselves challenge your identity.

Competing is exciting and it’s fun, you put on the costume and the makeup, but this is it. This is ice skating, in practice rinks. In practice, we cry, we get pissed off, we kick walls, we spit, we punch things. But people never see that, because when we’re on the ice, we’re glittery snow angels.

[Tara Modlin: You know the funny thing, I don't know where you wrote this, but the Japanese and the Korean people, when they write to me now, they sometimes reference "the agentress." They think that's a word.]

It sounds nicer when you add a -tress to the end. So if you work at McDonald's, you can be a McDonald'stress. It sounds so much nicer than "I work at McDonald's," does it not?

I think Evan Lysacek is a strong, consistent skater and he is definitely somebody who is one of my top rivals. He usually does something very interesting with his choreography and his jumps are decent, so he is definitely near the top of the sport. I don't like losing to people I've previously beaten, and Evan defeated me three times last season, but in my defense I was injured the three times he beat me. I love competing against him because he is so strong, but I don't want to lose to him.

I learned a lot actually. I have learned that I have limits being in front of a camera, especially on a bad day when I don't want to see anybody or be seen for that matter. I learned that I'm a bit more of a brat than I gave myself credit for. I was a real jerk to Priscilla [Hill] in the closing months of our relationship.

[Q: When people say that figure skating is not really a manly sport. What would you tell them? and why?]

When I first started figure skating, I heard this from hockey players. One day a coach yelled at his players because they were shouting at the skaters and being rude and they smelled, and the coach says, "I'd like to see all of you fall from that height in the air, wearing nothing but some spandex and glitter, get up and keep skating. You all wear pads, don't skate too much and still cry. Give me twenty push-ups." I may have varied the words a little bit, but I still remember it because it gave me the chin up against those "macho sports."

The short program is definitely tequila. But top-shelf tequila, not the kind that makes you want to kill yourself the next day. It's very spicy and very Latin and a little bit dirty toward the end. The free program is a very, very old vintage red wine. It's very smooth and dramatic and dark in places. Yes, I'd say tequila and red wine is this year. Bad mix, but good when they're separate.

I'm clearly not the most masculine person you've ever seen before, but I'm a very clear person in the figure skating world, my style is mine, and that's something that I'm proud of. I'm not like anyone else--like "Purple Pajamas." Purple Pajamas--there are like 13 of them. You know, I'm "the one." That's me.

I don't generally make a habit of being friends with the people I complete against, and before Torino I didn't feel close at all to Evan Lysacek. We really connected on this trip and hit it off and I feel like I got to know him and I'm excited that I'll have a friend on the team now.

Evan works hard and deserved his success.

I have a primarily warm relationship with Evan Lysacek. From the past few years in the media it would seem quite the opposite and through careful editing and writing the media has created a rivalry and coldness that isn't exactly true.
--figureskatersonline.com/johnnyweir, Johnny Weir Online, questions and answers, September 2009
We are at war. My claws are out.
[Q: I read someone's blog, and it says you and Evan are sharing hotel rooms during the tour. If it's true, do you have a good time with Evan?]

I actually room alone this year. I like to have my own space. Evan's a good guy.

I have no respect for Evan Lysacek.

Evan and I do push each other in skating. It's not that we don't get along, because we do, but we're competitors and in many ways each other's biggest rival, so would Hitler and Stalin have sat down to tea? Probably not.

Evan--he's a slore.
--The Wendy Williams Show, April 28, 2010
I respect Evan, very much. I think he's a good skater with a lot of great qualities. Off the ice he's a pretty good guy. We're competitors, so it's not like I'm going to be his best friend, but I think he's a nice guy and a talented one.

The first environment I was ever confronted with drugs wasn't in high school, or hanging out at the mall, it was in figure skating. The federation can kid themselves all they want, but drugs are a very real thing. I may joke about them, which perhaps I should keep a lid on, but just because I'm talking about them doesn't mean everyone else in the sport isn't. They just choose to be safe, and fake in an interview.

[How did Pop Star on Ice get started? How did it begin?]

So my guys over here were filming a documentary about figure skating, because it is a very interesting little...world that the sport holds. There are so many different people in it, it's kind of like a crack house...with rhinestones and glitter.

Treat yourself well, for your outside beauty needs everyday care. I think your inside beauty is nurtured by loving yourself, and it will show on the outside. As long as you believe in and love yourself, nothing but good will happen to you. You will surely be beautiful and attractive.
