Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

Looking at the ladies free skate: 130 to 140 is good; 140 plus is a great score; and basically 150 plus is Russian.

I would just give him all the gold medals: the slalom, the bobsled, the luge, figure skating.

It definitely is helpful when Tara and I get to go the barns first and meet the horses because we get to look them in the eye, and we get to give these beautiful creatures a proper iron stare down and just kind of really, really inspire them to win so that Tara will win so we can go buy shoes.

For me, a great skating costume is a costume that will make photographs; it will be something that you can see on the cover of a magazine. It could be something that you'll have photographs of yourself for the rest of your life, sitting on the medal stand while listening to your national anthem. And you look wonderful. That, to me, is a successful costume.

The only score I remember was when I tied Evan Lysacek at Nationals, and he beat me because he won the long program. And that was 244.77. That's a number I will never forget.

[Nick McCarvel: What was your highest score under the IJS scoring system on the international stage, and, Johnny, where did it take place?]

On the international stage? Um, it was at the...Olympics....and it was something. As many of my fans know, I never really understood the judging system while I was skating. So scores I remember very few of.

Becoming a champion doesn't always involve taking the popular route.

I love seeing how they decide that a certain shoe would sell at "Pay Less" stores for $12, and a shoe that looks similar would sell at Manolo Blahnik's for $580. It's kind of like deciding how one girl at Worlds who does seven triples ends up in 12th place, and another girl who also does seven triples is in first.

I am not proud of every single moment, but I am proud that I had those moments. I am proud of the titles that I won, and I am sad about the ones I lost.

I never, for once in my competitive career was skating in the middle of a performance thinking about my boyfriend, or the fact that I was gay, or pride parades. I was thinking about landing my jumps and winning medals.

My name is Johnny Weir. I have succeeded many times but I am just as proud of many of my great failures. I failed to win a medal at the Olympics, but I went twice and skated the performances of my lifetime. I failed to have a successful first marriage, but I allowed myself to love. I have naked photos on the Internet, but my body is nothing to be ashamed of.

When I was watching the men’s event the other night and nobody was skating as if they wanted to win the gold medal, I wanted to jump out of the booth. I kept poking Tara and it was hard to watch because I knew that my level of competition, even when I was retiring in the fall, that I could have competed with those guys.
