Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

Now I know what it is to be one of those sports fans that like to cheer and bump bellies in bars. I just wanted to hug you and like slap your hand.

I make so many fans of music angry per year. It's not a proper skating season unless I anger someone.

The sparkle of rhinestones sometimes does distract men, especially our male audience, from seeing what’s actually going on on the ice, which is young people at their height of physical prowess doing something that very few people can do, in the most high-pressure and high-profile level.

[Nick McCarvel: Johnny is flawless so far in this quiz that we thought at Icenetwork was going to be very difficult, but so far, he's proving us wrong.]

I loved it, and I'm my own biggest fan so study myself constantly.

[Nick McCarvel: What was your highest score under the IJS scoring system on the international stage, and, Johnny, where did it take place?]

On the international stage? Um, it was at the...Olympics....and it was something. As many of my fans know, I never really understood the judging system while I was skating. So scores I remember very few of.

[Douglas Razzano: What’s the strangest thing a fan ever gave you?]

Panties--

[Douglas Razzano: The foot massager?]

Not the foot massager. Panties. Clean ones! Clean ones. New ones.

Blogger's note: the foot massager Razzano refers to was a fan's gift to Johnny which made an appearance in a classic scene from Be Good Johnny Weir, Season 1, Ep. 7, Back on Top.

People were tuning into a cable network and spending an entire event with us. They were sneaking us at work. That's our biggest thrill, that people decided to spend their time with us and to hear figure skating from us and let us teach them what we know.

The wave is very efficient here in Russia. We've seen it a few times throughout the team event. And they will go one direction and very promptly and everyone all together will switch directions. It's a very efficient wave--the Russian wave.

[What’s your absolute favorite move to do on the ice?]

Spinning or standing in front of thousands in a sparkly costume and shaking my butt.

Through the trials and tribulations with the figure skating world and a lot of mistakes I’ve made, my fans can see that no matter how many times I’ve fallen down, I get back up every time.

I have found through my years of competing and training that nobody cares what my opinions are, what country I represent or what group of people, they care if I skate well or not.

I've felt so secure in Russia and not oppressed at all; I wouldn't be booed for being gay there, I'd be booed if I performed badly.

Figure skating is theatrical, artistic; it's elegant, it's extremely athletic. There's a very specific audience for that. I can say I don't watch football games, so I don't understand why a football fan would come to watch figure skating.

I'm misread, I think. People tend to think that I'm putting on an act, or that I'm being "refreshing," as they say, just to appeal to a different demographic, a different set of people. And it's not that. This whole career, this whole journey for me, has just been about myself. It's a very selfish dream to want to go to the Olympics and to compete well, win medals, that kind of thing.

[Any tips for fans who will be seeing skating live for the first time?]

Marvel at the speed of figure skating. Appreciate that even if someone falls down, it takes guts to perform for the world and it also takes years of hard work to be at center ice performing for you. I'd also like people to cheer for the favorites, but don't forget to clap and scream for the underdogs, the unknowns and the rivals.

I don’t think any facelift for my sport will change the viewers who are watching. I don’t think turning figure skating into some kind of X-Games event will promote figure skating to the male population of especially North America, but also the world.
