Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

Sometimes the most heartwarming part of hosting anything, when you know lots of people are watching you, is when you can be a complete cheese doodle like Mika saying that an alarm clock is somebody's sound of beauty.

(after Eurovision's co-host Mika included an "alarm going off in the morning" in his list of sounds someone might find beautiful)

This beauty mark is a pimple actually. That's how I'm fronting.

I can't find a cure for cancer; but I can ice skate, and I guess that is what I was born to do. I have the opportunity to give people four-and-a-half minutes of seeing something beautiful. That's my contribution to the world.

A white albino peacock is my spirit animal.

[Any particular reason why?]

Because they’re rare and unique and gorgeous, and I just love them. I love the way they just prance around like, Look at my ass.

Evil comes in many forms, including beauty. The quickest way to become a victim is to allow yourself to be victimized. Fight back, noses up.

[Y]ou have to be prepared for any condition, and you have to be prepared to look beautiful the whole time. That’s my advice for Tara or any first-timer at the Derby. You have to be ready, or at least have somebody that can carry you around.

When life seems like it’s too much or too hard, there has to be an escape. People don’t always choose the healthiest escapes, but I think the true journey is to find something where you feel strong, beautiful, and comfortable.

Like it or not, cultural beauty is bred from fear and from feeling inadequate in yourself. I say celebrate this beautiful world we live in but start by finding the iconic beauty in yourself. Don’t hate the differences or what you’re taught to believe. Appreciate beauty for being human.

I'm getting my ass waxed to prepare for fashion week. If God decided to hate me for a moment, and I did happen to fall on the runway, and my pants split, at least everything will be beautiful and clean and smooth.

I don't believe it promotes anything except the technical aspects of figure skating. This system really is the downfall of figure-skating being a beautiful sport to watch. Now everything is done as a math problem.

When I was traveling, well, I had a short Russian woman that was constantly yelling at me...and she would help me stick to my diet. And she would bring me coffee, and she would do that thing where we're sitting together in a restaurant...and she would be looking at the menu with her glasses half down, she'd have all her diamonds on and, you know, her hair all done, and she'd go [Johnny mimics Galina's accent] "Johnnyk, I think salad and chicken." And it never changed no matter where we were. [Johnny mimics Galina again] "Johnnyk, lovely chicken and green salad with vinegar. Perfect." But then she'd back it up, and she'd go, "You look so good. You look beautiful. You have no butt anymore, and you look great. Quad--nothing." And then she'd do a little dance, and she'd make me feel really good about myself.

[What do you think defines the worth of a person?]

The worth of a person is defined by who they are deep down inside. Stripped of all the exterior arrogance, beauty, ignorance, and so on, people should be defined on who they are and what they feel. This is a strange question because I've never been asked it, but essentially I think people are their most alive and REAL first thing in the morning, before they've had time to think up their first snappy punchline, or brush their hair. Reality of self is what defines a person. Thank you for such a "thinky" question!
