Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

That horrible realization that you've just purchased "Select-A-Size" paper towels. Give me billowing @Bounty with Sakura print forever.

I see myself as an artist before an athlete. Which is why if I miss jumps, I'm cool with it. But if I miss an arm movement or a look in my eyes or whatever, then I hate it.

[F]igure skating is a way that I can release that inner artist in myself at all times while exercising and staying in shape and keeping my ass like a bookshelf, where it should be.

[Pete Dominick: You put...you can...can you...is your ass so tight and firm that you could set books on it? Is that what you're saying? Is that what you’re articulating?]

Oh, yeah, I’ve cracked an apple.

Inside, I’m definitely an artist, and that’s something that has only helped my skating. But because of all these crazy things I do and say and the way I act, people forget that I’m also an athlete.

Spent my whole flight designing blazers and passing out. It's amazing when a sketch turns into a Pollock copy due to narcolepsy. ➰

[What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?]

Working hard to become the man and artist I want to be and doing it my way.

Figure skating is theatrical, artistic; it's elegant, it's extremely athletic. There's a very specific audience for that. I can say I don't watch football games, so I don't understand why a football fan would come to watch figure skating.

[M]y style, personally, is just me being free and trying to express myself, and figure skating is different from other sports because you have the opportunity to be athletic but at the same time you can make it an art form and really present yourself in a different light, and not do things the same way that everyone else does. And that's just always been my philosophy on my skating, and I love being a little bit different than my competitors and it's nice. And I'm hopefully going to inspire younger skaters to be their own skater, and kind of march to their beat.

When I'm competing I think about showing something gorgeous and having real emotion. I'm not thinking about points and math. Some people say that's my problem. I'm always going to be more of an artist than an athlete. That's my biggest struggle.

[I]t was as if the bird's spirit had untethered me from my last remaining inhibitions. Both my personality and persona were in serious flux. The Swan took my natural inclination for poetic license and launched it into the realm of pure camp. Freeing my artistic side in a way that flew in the face of my federation's ideals transformed me from the innocent to seriously sassy in what I had to say.

I totally understand that at times I'm very tacky and over-the-top like for Miss USA when I was judging it wearing this big Chris Benz feather coat, and it looked like different colored boas just wrapped around me, and it was pretty ridiculous, and for me, I think fashion's artwork, and for me, I thought it was a beautiful piece of work.

Sixes are great. They're very cool. But you know, as far as the artistic side of the program, I know I have skated it better in the past. If the judges wanted to give me 6.0s, that was their choice and I'm down with that.

If America was a more artistic nation that's national pastime didn't involve balls, athletic jock straps, chewing gum and bats, skating would be more appreciated.

I am flamboyant, I am artistic, I am different, I'm weird, I have one highlight in my hair. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that, and people that have an issue with me for all the wrong reasons--my flamboyance, my over-the-top gayness, as they would say--it's usually because they have something going on inside themselves...It's not me hurting them.

I like to make an impression, I like to make art. With the new judging system, it’s taking away the individuality of the sport. At the moment, it’s looking a little bit like tennis, just hitting back and forth and nothing changes. That’s a shame to me.

It's been some time since I've competed, so my goal would be to be prepared this summer for competition...and just try to get myself skinny and beautiful and artistically prepared for the crazy world that is competitive figure skating.
