Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

Now that I’ve slept on what my gymnastics career would look like, I think I’d be more focused on my vault run face than my actual vault which isn’t conducive to long term success. I’ll stick to sit spins over wolf spins.

Learn from other people’s successes, but never compare your achievements to theirs. Your journey is your own and there is no template other than the one you make for yourself.

Nobody simply arrives. They suffer & achieve in silence while no one is looking and then, they create magic.

My name is Johnny Weir. I have succeeded many times but I am just as proud of many of my great failures. I failed to win a medal at the Olympics, but I went twice and skated the performances of my lifetime. I failed to have a successful first marriage, but I allowed myself to love. I have naked photos on the Internet, but my body is nothing to be ashamed of.

I wish you all health, love, and abounding success in the New Year.

I also wish for a simpler dance craze: think “Macarena 2014.”

Finding your personal success doesn’t always come in a cookie-cutter shape, not even on eBay. There are people who respond well to a business plan set forth for them. “You will have a 4.0 GPA, you will go to an Ivy League university, and you will become a highly successful doctor, lawyer, or business man.” Those people may run the world in many ways, but some of us are born to play with that thin red line. Some of us have the beautiful opportunity to forge our own path and make a difference in our own idea of what success is.

My advice to anyone is to take the path that will work for you. While you will fall flat on your face many times, the finale will be sweet: You will reach your goal and you will have your own brain to thank. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, so use yours wisely.

I'm as normal as anybody that I know. My relationship is as strong and as healthy as anybody that I know. And I live a life of integrity and success and strength. And if I'm illegal, then you should be illegal as well.

It might be nice to be talked down about because it will give me the space to be Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

[T]he paramount reason we were married was because we loved, and love, one another deeply and are invested in making our marriage a success story no matter the cost.

I believe that the strongest people with the most success coming to them are the ones who can laugh at all the silly blunders or foot in mouth moments.

[Many celebrities mark their success as the moment they could afford extravagant items--did you ever have that moment of buying a $27,000 beaded dress just to keep in the closet because it looked pretty?]

I’m a humble figure skater, so I can’t really buy a dress that’s just to wear in the car. But I had that feeling during the *NSync period, so be with me on this--I went to Neiman Marcus and bought this pair of $380 Dolce & Gabbana patchwork jeans. Not even Dolce & Gabbana, they were D&G. They had all different kinds of denim--distressed, with stars on them, some seersucker. They were ridiculous but I kept them because I know they’ll be back in style one day. That’s the first moment when I felt like I could buy something big.

Blogger's note: Johnny has said that those jeans are his biggest retail regret.

We'd sign autographs after the show and some people would look at me and think I was maybe part of the crew. It would be great to have success like Sasha or Michelle Kwan but the other side of that is they are absolutely mobbed by fans. It is nice to have some privacy.

[Q: How do I encourage my son and keep him strong as THE ONLY BOY taking figure-skating lessons right now in our area? I want him to continue on knowing that it doesn’t matter. His happiness matters.]

My mother constantly told me she was proud of me and also made sure I understood the magnitude of what I was doing. She would say things like, “If you want to go to the Olympics one day, you will.” I think as long as you show your son how loved he is and how invested the family is in his success, nothing else really will affect him.

I enjoy every second of my day. I realize how lucky I am, how fortunate. The sheer outpouring of love from audiences is thrilling. Many are afraid of success--I'm afraid of sharks and spiders.

[Q. What, in your opinion, is the sexiest quality in a potential partner?]

Soul. Looks fade, sex slows down, material things and success come in waves; the one thing I think is sexiest is that you can feel someone’s passions and their soul. A nice set of pouty lips parting to reveal a beautiful smile always helps too.
