Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

It's like Beyoncé has her alter ego when she's performing, Johnny Weir also has an alter ego when he's performing, and it's completely different than how I am in real life.

But then later at the same news conference, Johnny was asked if he had problems with the line between the alter ego “Johnny” and the real Johnny. His reply:

I feel like it’s not so much an alter ego or a persona. I feel like you just have all of it inside you and all of it can come out at any given time. You can be an asshole or a lover at the same time and it just happens like that and you can’t control it. That’s what I feel like with me…I never feel like there’s a personality that’s like climbing to get out…I want to express every personality in me whether that’s "On the Ice Johnny," or "On the TV Show Johnny," or "Sitting and Doing My Nails Johnny," they all need their time.

Blogger's note:  And then there's "Contradictory Johnny."

  1. I don't really feel like this is very contradictory, more like he's further explaining a thought he began earlier, like two ways of thinking about the same concept, when "alter ego" didn't resonate, he delved deeper to explain it as different aspects of one's innate personality. I'm not arguing or anything, I love your blog. :) -Jayna
