Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

When I skate my best performances, all of my feelings and emotions come from my soul. Figure skating is my outlet, my art, my painting, my fashion design. It’s how I speak, and I speak from my soul. When I’m off the ice, I think I act more from my heart. “Soul” and “heart” are two different things for me. The soul is something that is inside you when you are born, and the last thing you feel when you die. But your heart is what makes you “yourself”. It’s what gives you a face; it’s what gives you color. It’s what gives you vibrancy. For me, on the ice, it’s “soul.” Off the ice, it’s “heart.” It’s good to have both. If I were the same everywhere I would probably be bored.
