Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

I think the Inland [Forecast] is very important because it's farthest from the sharks.

[Tara Lipinski: Johnny hates sharks.]

I hate sharks and I know they're up here in that Bay.

On Friday I had a very severe attack of vertigo...If you've not had it, it's kinda like being on a cruise ship in a hurricane and also Sharknado at the same time.

There was something very gray Russian snow mystery about the whole choreographic moment.

Tender Vegetation. Can that be one of our drag names?

[T]he sun. It's almost like God is trying to say, "You're going to be happy right now," and I'm like, "Eff you, I don't want to be happy right now." So then it's just this constant fight between me and Jesus and the weather.

It's 65 degrees. It's 65 degrees at night in February. Mommy hates it. Mommy also hates melting ice caps. Mommy can't swim well.

We are terrified of the sun. We are so white and we work indoors. I go big with my hair which creates a natural shield. I bought all of my weaves yesterday.

[Nick McCarvel: We are gonna quiz you on...Johnny Weir! How do you think you're gonna do?]

Fair to poor. I will do fair to poor, and it's freezing so my mental capacity is a little bit...not as good as usual.

We tried to rewrite things like "Oh, I'm freeish after 6." It will not accept "freeish." It then gives me "penguins hobble, delicately, across the snow."

Oddly enough, I've seen a lot of girls out there with pretty spring dresses with, like, a winter "hooker" boot, and I find that strange. It's rough, a little bit. It makes me nervous.

I think something that I wasn’t prepared for when I attended the Derby in 2010 was that it was really hot. And then it rained and it got muggy. And then it was hot again. I chose to wear Chanel tweed that day. It doesn’t really breathe, so you get shiny and sweaty and puffy from water retention and drinking too much.

[Y]ou have to be prepared for any condition, and you have to be prepared to look beautiful the whole time. That’s my advice for Tara or any first-timer at the Derby. You have to be ready, or at least have somebody that can carry you around.

Last time I was just so uncomfortable with the weather. And I was dressed for a slight chill. I was in tweed. I was in a tie. I had a button up. I had a huge sun hat that was black. I sweated through my foundation. It was just not a good scene. I was not cute.

A telltale sign is when you see a lot of snow come up on that landing. You want, you know, a gentle flurry, because it's natural that when you hit the ice, there's going to be a little snow, but when there's a full-on blizzard, that means it was probably under-rotated.

Seventeen years ago, a sunny day came along where the ice that covered a bleak cornfield glistened in the late afternoon sun. Seventeen years ago, my feet were covered for the first time by leather and steel. Seventeen years ago, I took my first step onto the ice, in the most unlikely of circumstances, yet dressed head to toe in dreams.

It will be a long time until I wake up in the morning not imagining that I’m late for practice, and in addition to never forgetting the sheer magic of giving my heart and soul to the world, I will never forget the smell of the air, the glint of the sun on the slippery surface, or the feelings I had 17 years ago on that cornfield.
