Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

The only score I remember was when I tied Evan Lysacek at Nationals, and he beat me because he won the long program. And that was 244.77. That's a number I will never forget.

[If you could style anyone who would it be?]

Evan Lysacek, just to put him in a sparkly onsie.

If Evan hadn't skated before me and skated so well, I probably wouldn't have skated to the level I was pushed. So for me, it's very healthy to have a rivalry--as long as more than not I'm at the top top of the rivalry.

I was Johnny Weir long before I knew who Evan Lysacek was, and I will be Johnny Weir long after we've done our competition careers...I am a single skater. I don't skate on a team. And I'm Johnny Weir, not the second half of the double-billing for the U.S. men's team.
--globeandmail.com, "Johnny Weir keeps his focus," March 6, 2008
I've already been told there are certain networks in the United States that want Evan and I to skate at every competition together, just to make some kind of TV ratings and to make interest in figure skating again.

I have been around for too long to be intimidated by a quad, a flying mane of blond hair or a tanned face.

I have nothing but respect for him, but I don’t have admiration. I suppose that’s where you could draw the line saying that I’m a callous bitch when I talk about Evan Lysacek.

[Michael Buckley on What the Buck? video "Figure Skating is GAY! Miss America Gets a MAKEOVER!" after 2008 Nationals:

Evan and Johnny act like they hate each other, but you know they're totally doing it! They have a rivalry. They probably text each other all day...
]

Johnny's response on Buckley's MySpace:

Love it, bitch! We totally don't text!

[Billy Bush: You have a rivalry with Evan Lysacek, I think you once compared it to the likes of Britney versus Christina. Who's Britney, who's Christina?]

I would be Christina for sure.

[Billy Bush: Why?]

Because...I've got the voice.
--Access Hollywood, AH Nation, March 5, 2010

Blogger's note: Although not in the Access Hollywood video, Johnny apparently was next asked what Evan had in common with Britney and he replied:

Feet? I don't know what they share.

I remember Evan came up and he was the first person to hug me after all that happened. He said, "You know, it will be okay. Next year you'll be great." And he was right, I did great the next year. I remember that. I never held him in higher esteem. No matter how many times I lose to him or how many times he loses to me, and whatever courses our lives take, I'll always think of him from then. That wasn't even sportsmanship; that was just a good person. We didn't know each other that well except just being competitors, and that was a loving person. To do that sort of thing and be my competitor. He could have sat back on the couch and laughed at me. And I know a lot of people did. He just gave me a hug and said everything would be okay.

One funny thing that happened was Evan Lysacek borrowing my pants for the pro-am. I didn't want to be a total bitch and say the expected "NO!," so I let him. There are plenty of other people he could have borrowed pants from who are his size, but it made a better story wearing mine. Him wearing my pants was a hit for the media, and it's funny that he "forgot" his pants in my home state! How clever. They call me an attention whore? Please...

I don’t live just to be a champion. I don’t live just to beat Evan Lysacek, I don’t live for those things. I live for me, I live for fun, and I live to do everything what I want before life is finished. Just be yourself and that’s the only way you can be.

I call Evan Mongoose because at the Olympics we had a joke of always talking in Midwestern, Minnesota, Illinois accents and Mongoose sounds funny if you say it like that. Mongoose is also just a completely different animal than a swan, like Evan and I and it was a cute, funny nickname. Evan didn't know what a mongoose was, so I had to tell them it's a rodent that eats snakes like Riki Tiki Tavi and I think he got it. In any event, I have a strange sense of humor and I love that nickname.

There's nothing like competing in America, there's nothing like competing in my country, and there's nothing like...

[Evan Lysacek: Isn't that what you said in Japan?]

That was very clever for Evan.

When I returned from Russia, I was expecting to see some kind of announcement from my federation or the US Olympic Committee that I had won an award, but I didn't see anything. I know it's interesting when Evan Lysacek attends a movie premiere, and I could pee myself with glee if Kimmie Meissner throws out one more pitch at a baseball game, but I actually won something! I am very proud of it, and that's why I'm ranting, forgive me!

Blogger's note: On December 7, 2007, Johnny added the following to his journal: "I want to thank the people at ESPN, staffers at USFSA and members of Skating Magazine for taking prompt action in recognizing my award that I was upset had gone unrecognized. I immediately got reactions for everyone after my latest journal entry was posted and I want to thank them for getting to me so quickly. I overreacted and they were a little out of the loop as far as my award, 'Lyubov k Rossii' goes. I am sorry for anyone I offended or hurt with my rant and I am glad the award is getting recognized by my country and federation. Thanks."

I have nothing bad to say about Evan. I think he's been a great person for our sport and, you know, while he's doing Dancing with the Stars and being the Olympic champion, last night I went on George Lopez and I rode a yak.

I couldn't be more proud of what Evan was able to accomplish at the Olympic Games. I think he worked so hard for that. I mean, he's seven-feet tall and is able to do triple axels. That's pretty incredible.

[Would it bother you more to lose the gold at nationals to Evan, or be beaten by someone else?...[I]f it's Evan for gold, and Johnny second--would you then rather it be him in the top spot or prefer it to be anyone but him?]

If I'm second, and someone else is first, I would expect that someone to be Evan. It doesn't make it more lovely that it would be him, but I consider Evan the other top guy. To me, it's like the Plushenko-Yagudin rivalry. If one didn't win, the other probably should have. Evan and I have to defend the top two territories--like a sick little army.
