Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

This beauty mark is a pimple actually. That's how I'm fronting.

I’m a passive activist in some ways, because I live my life with integrity, I only move forward, and that’s my choice. That’s how I live.

It isn’t just a gay sport. I mean, I believe me, I looked high and low for somebody else that would understand me, and there were very few choices. The...most of the guys are straight, and, you know, they like beer, not champagne, and they like...they like boobs. And it’s weird for me, because part of the allure of figure skating was the, you know, gay men that I'd heard about my whole time growing up, but, you know, it’s kind of a disappointment...

I am actually in my car on my way to practice. I am wearing, let's just say it's a pair of underpants and a silk robe. That's usually how I roll first thing in the morning.

For what a stiletto heel can do for your legs and your butt and the way you look from far away, I feel like more men should wear stilettos.
--KISS 108FM, Matty in the Morning, interview, September 17, 2014
You know what? I would consider that the hardest part about especially the guys that skate pairs or ice dance, when they skate directly with the girl and touch all over the girl...

[Pete Dominick: Oh yeah, when I watch that, I’m like, How do they do that? I mean, I guess they...]

Oh yeah, they wear tight tight tight pants.

[Pete Dominick: Sure.]

And you can’t hide when something...pops up.

You have to be confident. You have to be a little bit arrogant to make it through this life alive.

It looks really, really pretty from the outside the figure skating world, but inside, I mean, bring it on Black Swan, that was nothing. Pulling out your fingernails...please!

I have lived my life to be Johnny Weir. I haven’t lived my life to be a letter in an acronym. I work very hard as an athlete, as a person, as a loved one, and that’s what life is about. It isn’t about adhering to something that you’re supposed to adhere to.

The long program--it's about four minutes, forty seconds for the men--and it’s kind of the equivalent of running a full marathon and then at the end having to appear as though you don’t sweat, and you have to smile. And then get scores.

[T]he whole point of my life is not to be "normal"; it's to be exceptional.

I am in a really, really solid relationship with my luggage. That is kind of what we’re talking about here, but I think you’re envisioning kind of leather diapers and feathery headdresses, and it’s not that. I just want you to, you know, erase that from your mind.

[F]igure skating is a way that I can release that inner artist in myself at all times while exercising and staying in shape and keeping my ass like a bookshelf, where it should be.

[Pete Dominick: You put...you can...can you...is your ass so tight and firm that you could set books on it? Is that what you're saying? Is that what you’re articulating?]

Oh, yeah, I’ve cracked an apple.

[Pete Dominick: I'm not a big fan of competition period.]

Why?

[Pete Dominick: For a number of reasons.]

What happened to you when you were young? Show me on the doll where the bad man touched you.

It doesn't make a difference to me that my life is splashed in newspapers, or if it was just for my parents to see what I was going through. It hurts all the same.

I don't really know if there's anywhere more gay to go when I'm skating to a performance by Lady Gaga.

I'm very gay...I give Sir Elton a run for his money in many respects.

Should I be arrested, should my life be threatened, I'll know that I'll be there for a purpose, I'll know I'll be there to help my community and my brothers and sisters.

If you're constantly worried about wowing the judges and impressing them, then you're kind of going the wrong way, because you won't always impress them.
