Funny Fact about Florida. Whenever we try to use a location for
shooting, the initial reaction is, "you're not shooting a porno right?"

Johnny Weir
Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

[Nick McCarvel: What year was your first senior Nationals?...]
2001, Boston, I popped a triple axel in the short, and I won America's heart in the long because I was young. And cute.

[Nick McCarvel: In 2006, what was the number one song on the U.S. charts when you went to the Olympics?]
Um...[long pause]...See I'm that person that'll hear a Rhianna song like a year after it was popular, and I think it's cool. I'm your grandmother. Welcome to me being a grandmother. I feel like if it wasn't, it should have been...The Way We Were by Barbra Streisand.
[Nick McCarvel: Well, it wasn't quite that year. It was Beyoncé Check On It. What about in 2010? Do you remember 2010 when you went to the Olympics in Vancouver? What were you jamming out to?]
A lot of Russian techno-pop. But if it wasn't, it should have been The Way We Were by Barbra Streisand.

(according to McCarvel, the top song in 2010 was TiK ToK by Ke$ha.)

[ Q: Sochi Olympics: What is your favorite memory?]
I feel like Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir were really the breakout stars of the Sochi Olympics. I, like most of America, sat at home and enjoyed every second of their fashion, their insight and their wit.

Vladislav telling me a story about what happened to him directly to my face opened my eyes to what’s going on there, more so than any American activist that was dumping out bottles of Latvian vodka thinking it was Russian in the summer of 2013.

I don't think your average dude in Wichita is running to the Liz
Claiborne section at Macy’s, but I definitely think softer styles and
attention to detail are becoming so important in men’s wear as well as
the fit.

[F]or me, as far as activism and trying to fix something in the world? If I
was to donate that time for myself to fixing anything, it would be my
own situation in America. There's still a huge portion of the country
I'm still not seen as an equal human to my best friend or my mother, and
I think that needs to change before America can go around bossing the
rest of the world around.

The only funny thing is sometimes--but this happens in America too--that I'll walk into a bathroom, be standing at a urinal, because I can stand to piddle and...
[Bob Costas: Congratulations.]
Thank you! And...um...a gentleman will walk in, he'll look at me or my weave, then he'll turn out the door and look to see what shape is on the door outside to make sure he's not in the ladies room. I confuse people, but it's never in a negative way.

There are parts of the United States where I'm still considered a
subhuman; don't you think Americans should try to change our own country
first? As foreign citizens, we can't change anything about
the way they do things in Russia, so just being here to lend support to
the people is the biggest thing we can do.

I'm proud that I can be here in my necklaces and my wedge booties, and
nobody is saying anything. Nobody is looking at me weird, nobody is
saying anything derogatory. I honestly get more of an uncool situation
walking down certain streets in Manhattan or being in the center of our
country.

Pairs is not the strongest discipline for the United States. We have a kind of problem with people switching out partners whenever they’re unhappy. The European teams that usually are stronger stay together for life. They’re like penguins.

I have found through my years of competing and training that nobody cares what my opinions are, what country I represent or what group of people, they care if I skate well or not.

My dress is decidedly understated, all black for maximum skinniness as I blast across people’s TV screens from Philadelphia to Topeka, Des Moines to Orange County. Despite the understated color, I look like a streetwalker in designer leggings that give the illusion of garters.
