Johnny Weir

Whether witty or wise, controversial or charming, shocking or silly, sweet or sassy, provocative or profound, inspiring or infuriating--or any combination of those--Johnny Weir, the three-time U.S. Champion, two-time Olympian, and World medalist figure skater, almost always says something worth quoting whenever he commentates a skating competition, makes a TV appearance, gives an interview, holds a press conference, writes, tweets, or is caught on video. His quotes needed to be collected and shared; hence this blog.

Efendi competed for Azerbaijan last year and she performed a song called “Mata Hari,” and it was just full black fishnet sparkle. Something that I would wear on the ice.

The ruggedness of flannel rarely finds its way onto Olympic ice.

Special thank you to Keegan Messing for skating well but more importantly, for wearing flannel.

I have costume fittings today & I just know it’s going to be torturous because my diet hasn’t caught up to my brain yet. The thing about lime green latex though, it hides all of life’s little lumps That is an absolute lie.

This moment when there are technical glitches with the computers and things like that are so uncomfortable, when you're the one left out on the ice, it's kind of like you're the one who showed up to grade school wearing a Halloween costume and no one else has one on. And everyone can see you.

Tara and I unfortunately are afraid to watch [short track speed skating] live. That's a lot of flying blades and sliding falls. And, you know, blades straight to the face. It's not something I'm really into. We're into sparkles and wardrobe malfunctions, not a violent blade.
--NBC, chat with Mike Tirico on Prime Plus Show, 2018 Olympics, February 18, 2018
("wardrobe malfunctions" refers to French ice dancer Gabriella Papadakis' costume becoming unfastened shortly after her program with partner Guillaume Cizeron began, exposing her breast at one point during their performance)

I’d have to jazz up the costume a little bit, but I definitely think I’d be a very, very adept ski jumper.

Her old costume looked like a prop couch from the set of Saved by the Bell.

For me, a great skating costume is a costume that will make photographs; it will be something that you can see on the cover of a magazine. It could be something that you'll have photographs of yourself for the rest of your life, sitting on the medal stand while listening to your national anthem. And you look wonderful. That, to me, is a successful costume.

The sparkle of rhinestones sometimes does distract men, especially our male audience, from seeing what’s actually going on on the ice, which is young people at their height of physical prowess doing something that very few people can do, in the most high-pressure and high-profile level.

Love you @jasoncollins98! If you'd ever challenge me to a game, I'll find a way to make our costumes out of rival basketball nets.

Is it like a techno-remix of An American in Paris?...Is it with Jay-Z backup vocals?...'Cause I think an updated American in Paris would need that.

(response to Tara Lipinski saying that ice dance partners Madison Cholk and Evan Bates' free dance costumes were appropriate for their "updated" version of An American in Paris)

You know what? I would consider that the hardest part about especially the guys that skate pairs or ice dance, when they skate directly with the girl and touch all over the girl...

[Pete Dominick: Oh yeah, when I watch that, I’m like, How do they do that? I mean, I guess they...]

Oh yeah, they wear tight tight tight pants.

[Pete Dominick: Sure.]

And you can’t hide when something...pops up.

I realized that these people will mean absolutely nothing to me. Screw it. I am doing it myself. I am just going to be so good that there is no feasible way they can leave me off of those teams.
